Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation

Global Compliance for International Aviation Emissions

CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) is the first global market-based mechanism for a single industry sector, designed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). It aims to stabilize CO₂ emissions from international aviation at 2019 levels through monitoring, reporting, and offsetting requirements.

From 2021 onwards, all international airlines operating between participating states are required to monitor their emissions, and from 2024, purchase eligible offset credits to compensate for emissions growth above the baseline.

CORSIA

Why CORSIA Matters to GCC Companies

Aviation is one of the core infrastructures of the Gulf region — with flag carriers, private operators, cargo fleets, and charters operating hundreds of international routes daily.

You are directly affected if:

  • You operate international flights (passenger or cargo) between ICAO member states
  • You are a private jet charter or air logistics provider serving cross-border clients
  • You intend to align with global ESG benchmarks or green finance standards

Compliance with CORSIA is mandatory for international flights.
Non-compliance means reputational risk, operational restrictions, or loss of high-profile ESG clients.

CORSIA Compliance Requirements

  • Annual Emissions Monitoring
Airlines must implement systems to monitor and report CO₂ emissions from international flights, in compliance with ICAO MRV guidelines.
  • Offsetting Obligation
From CORSIA Phase 1 (2024–2026), operators must offset emissions exceeding 85% of their 2019 emissions baseline using:
    • CORSIA-eligible emission units, or
    • Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) that meet CORSIA lifecycle criteria
  • Verification and Reporting
All data must be verified by accredited entities and submitted annually to national authorities.
